Join the Flight: The EAA B-17 Aluminum Overcast is Coming to Manassas!

Mark your calendars: EAA Chapter 186 will host the Aluminum Overcast, the EAA’s beautifully restored WWII B-17 at Manassas Regional Airport Sep 28 to Oct 1, 2017. Plan on taking a ride, or just come out to watch her fly and take a ground tour to enjoy a visceral, up close and personal experience of history! Online pre-booking at reduced rates will be available through the EAA website soon.

Flights on the B-17 are $435 for EAA members and $475 for non-members ($409 and $449 respectively, if purchased online in advance), and are unique because passengers are buckled in only for takeoff and landing. The full experience lasts for about an hour, with the flight itself lasting about 25-30 minutes. As soon as the plane is airborne, the crew chief gives the signal for passengers to get up and move around; mobility permitting, passengers get to rove freely throughout the plane, with everyone getting a few minutes in the bombardier’s seat in that glass nose, being able to watch the pilots in the cockpit, walking through the bomb bay to visit the radio room, and stepping over and around the ball turret in the belly to take pictures in the waist with her twin 50-caliber machine guns. The only places people can’t go are into the ball and tail turrets – which would be too tight for most modern people to fit into, anyway!

EAA’s B-17 was built at the very end of the war, coming off the line at the Lockheed Vega plant in Burbank, CA on May 18, 1945, so she never saw combat, but she worked hard to earn her keep in the years after the war. Her many careers included life as a cargo hauler carrying beef from Florida to Puerto Rico from 1947-1949; as a high-altitude aerial mapping platform in the Middle East and Near East, logging time over Libya, Iran, Egypt, Thailand, Laos, Vietnam, Cambodia, and more from 1949-1962; and even as a bug bomber operating out of Dothan, Alabama against fire ants from 1967-1976. Intending to fly her around the world, warbird enthusiast Dr. William Harrison bought her in 1978 and gave her the Aluminum Overcast name, but the real cost of restoring and operating her prompted Harrison and his partners to donate her to EAA in 1981. Restored to a WWII military configuration with the financial support of the 398th Bomb Group Memorial Association, she began her current mission of touring the U.S. as a flying history museum in 1994.
