Our next Chapter 186 General Membership Gathering will be on Saturday morning, April 25th at 9 AM. This will be conducted as an online meeting using the Zoom meeting platform.

We will be discussing some of the upcoming online aviation events, the status of Airventure, and some of the plans that the chapter has for the rest of the year.

Rear Admiral Robert H. Shumaker, USN (Ret.) will be our guest speaker at the EAA 186 April 25th Membership Gathering via Zoom.

Rear Admiral Bob Shumaker graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1956 and subsequently earned two master’s degrees and a doctorate.

After flight training, he flew the F-8 Crusader, but was unfortunately shot down on a mission over North Vietnam in February 1965. As a POW in Hanoi for eight years, he is held in high regard by his fellow POW’s for his resistance, leadership and communication skills during imprisonment.

He served as a major project manager for precision guided munitions, as superintendent of the Naval Postgraduate School, and as a research coordinator at the Pentagon. His civilian career included jobs at George Washington University and the University of North Dakota.

His passion for aviation resulted in a homebuilt airplane which he has flown to such far away places as Alaska. Admiral Shumaker’s military decorations include the Distinguished Service Medal, two Silver Stars, four Legions of Merit, the Distinguished Flying Cross, a Bronze Star, and two Purple Hearts.

Zoom Meeting
Topic: EAA 186 April Membership Gathering
Time: Apr 25, 2020 09:00 PM Eastern Time (US and Canada)

The link to join the Zoom Meeting is in the Members Only section of this website. For password access, please contact Sande Miller-Long president@eaa186.org

There is a Zoom password provided with each meeting ID. If you click the meeting link, you should not need to also to use the password. But it is there, just in case.

Using Zoom:

There is no requirement to download anything to your computer, though if you want to establish an account with them and download the Zoom app it is free. There are also meeting apps available for iOS and Android devices in their respective app stores – again free.

Once signed in you will arrive in a ‘waiting room’ where the meeting host will then give you access to the meeting. You will be joined with both your computer microphone and camera turned off. You may activate your mic and or camera at your discretion.

Testing:

The meeting software will be turned on 1/2 hour before each meeting so that you can try it out and get your computer system set up to participate. Just join the meeting as described above and try out the meeting controls that you see on your screen.

Agenda:

Our Membership Zoom Gatherings and Board meetings will follow the normal agenda as if they were in-person meetings.

When the meeting starts, all attendees should mute their mics. Speakers will be called upon by the meeting host so people do not talk over one another. Zoom does have a “raise hand” feature, so please use that so the host knows someone wishes to speak.

Additional suggestions:

Please try to find a quiet place to log into the meeting, free of distractions like background noise, dogs barking, etc. If someone is experiencing audio issues the host will silence that person’s mic can so as to not disrupt the overall meeting.

If you are logging into the meeting from a mobile device, do everyone else a favor and find one place to sit down, as walking around during the meeting is extremely distracting.

While we’ve used Zoom for several smaller meetings, our April 25th Chapter Membership gathering will be our first attempt at a larger meeting size so please be patient with us if things don’t go smoothly. The success of this meeting will determine if we hold future meetings online until the Covid-19 threat subsides. We’re also giving though of making all our future in-person meetings available through Zoom for members who can’t make in to the Chapter House.
